JOB SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for providing a wide variety of support to City operations, departments, and special events which occur after normal business hours. The individual in this position will be required to drive a city vehicle as well as provide walking foot patrol to provide drive-by and close up visual checks of City facilities and assets. This requires the individual to be able to monitor, observe, confirm problems, provide corrective measures, and relay all findings to Communications Clerks so the proper department can be notified. This position is considered "essential personnel" and will be required to be able to respond to emergencies as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides visual inspection of City assets (e.g., streetlights, water storage tanks, etc.) and report malfunctions.
  • Inspects and maintains the temporary security and safety measures at City job sites (e.g., places barricades/cones to temporarily secure unsafe areas).
  • Places temporary signs and other temporary traffic control devices as deemed necessary to prevent accidents and property damage.
  • Assists other departments and agencies as needed (e.g., in handling accident clean up including spillage of vehicle fluids, etc.).
  • Places "No Parking" signs and barricades throughout the City as required.
  • Removes and properly disposes of small dead animals from City property and streets when reported or detected.
  • Detects and reports foul weather conditions (e.g., street icing, wind damage, downed trees, etc.).
  • Performs small-scale deicing when problems are detected or reported.
  • Assists as appropriate with tree branch and limb removal resulting from storm damage; secures site for public safety purposes.
  • Coordinates with the police and fire departments in support of their off-hour's operations.
  • Supports the needs of select after-hour special events.
  • Opens/closes park facilities as directed.
  • Occasionally cleans park restroom facility.
  • Relays data such as property damage, unusual occurrences, and malfunctioning of machinery or equipment, for use of supervisory staff.
  • Provides customer service as needed and appropriate.
  • Assists with facility cleaning and monthly inspections per a designated list using standard operating procedure guidelines.
  • Communicates and works effectively with the public, department, and other staff.
  • Operates a vehicle on a regular basis, observing legal and defensive driving practices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which demonstrates an ability to perform the required functions of this position.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES:
  • Vehicle Operator's license with satisfactory driving record that meets insurability standards of the City's insurance carrier is required. The employee must maintain the license for the duration of their employment.
REQUIRED SKILLS (Communication/Language; Mathematical; Computer; etc.):
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly under emergency conditions.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Employee is required to wear safety toe boots, and will be required to successfully complete trainings that may include but not be limited to Confined Space, CPR & First Aid, electrical safety, etc.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to move about to
observe city properties and provide departments after hours support. The employee is required to frequently operate vehicle for extended periods of time to monitor surveillance at off-site locations. The employee is occasionally required to remove and dispose of tree branches, animal carcasses, and any other objects that may be deemed a safety hazard on city property. The employee is regularly required to lift 50 lbs. and occasionally lift to 100 lbs. with assistance. The employee must be able to detect and communicate safety and security issues that may arise during the surveillance of city property. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
