Summary of the position

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for supporting all existing products and manufacturing processes related to mechanical and control systems used in Hitachi Global Air Power (HGAP) products. This includes troubleshooting, sustaining engineering activities, process improvements, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to enhance product performance, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness. This position plays a key role in ensuring operational excellence and continuous improvement across the lifecycle of mechanical compressor systems.

Location: On-site, Michigan City, Indiana

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 3–5 years of mechanical engineering experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Experience with CAD design tools (preferably Unigraphics NX or equivalent).
  • Experience working with suppliers, customers, and/or distributors.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience with component testing, safety control systems, and compliance standards.
  • For industrial compressors, electric motor experience.
  • For portable compressors, diesel engine experience
  • Industry knowledge in air compressors, industrial machinery, or similar mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively on cross-functional teams and meet project deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and analytical skills with hands-on troubleshooting experience.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with ERP systems (SAP) and engineering change processes.
  • Hands-on approach with proven analytical and troubleshooting skills in integrated systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support production and field teams by troubleshooting mechanical issues, improving First Pass Yield (FPY), and increasing throughput.
  • Serve as the primary contact for mechanical-related vendor quality issues; support corrective action initiatives and root-cause analysis.
  • Drive cost reduction efforts related to mechanical systems and component sourcing.
  • Collaborate with Product Engineering and Customer Service to ensure engineered orders meet mechanical specifications and customer requirements.
  • Evaluate mechanical systems, components, and applications by conducting research and applying mechanical and material science knowledge.
  • Maintain and update mechanical engineering documentation (e.g., drawings, BOMs) to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Lead continuous improvement projects for manufacturing processes and existing product lines.
  • Address aftermarket field issues by diagnosing compressor problems, recommending solutions, and verifying components.
  • Contribute to development activities for main component selection and specifications related to the air compressor systems.
  • Perform machine audits and support failure analysis to improve quality and update outdated or inaccurate designs.
  • Troubleshoot integrated control systems and assist with programming analytical equipment
