Job Description This recruitment is open until the needs of the department are met and may close without prior notice. Approximately 25 -39 hours per week (summer season) Approximately 0 - 20 hours per week (non-summer season) Hourly/Part-Time/At-Will Position ** Read the job bulletin in its entirety ** Important dates and information below under "Supplemental Information" Under general supervision, is responsible for the safety and rescue of facility patrons visiting the Aquatics Center facility; performs emergency care as necessary and responds to unsafe conditions or potential hazards; observes swimmers and assists guests; performs related work as required.
Typical Duties Performed (Examples do not include all duties which may be assigned.)
- Ensures an excellent guest experience.
- Observes and supervises swimmers in the pool and water park areas, identifies and prevents unsafe conditions or potential hazards.
- Identifies and rescues persons in distress or in danger of drowning; provides emergency care as necessary.
- Works effectively with the public in explaining and enforcing pool and aquatics center rules and facility use in order to provide a safe aquatics environment.
- Performs facility clean up and maintenance; inspects pool facilities and reports unsafe conditions.
- May assist with daily operations of Splash! Food Service.
- Assists with citywide special events and community recreation activities.
- Adheres to City and departmental policies and procedures.
- Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Must possess excellent customer services skills and the ability to work as a team. Knowledge of: Policies, procedures, and regulations governing the conduct and safety of persons using aquatic equipment and facilities; beginning through advanced swim strokes. Methods, materials, and equipment involved in the maintenance and operation of swimming pools.
Ability to: Pass initial test and routine follow-up skill tests regarding pool and safety procedures. Swim with proficiency and endurance. Organize and direct activities and effectively teach aquatic skills. Read, understand, and carry out written and oral directions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, community groups, staff, and other agencies. Exercise good judgment, courtesy, and tact with staff and the public. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs., and work varied shifts, including nights and weekends.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: - Must be at least 16 years of age and be able to provide a work permit if you have not completed high school or the equivalent and are under age 18.
- Any combination of education and experience, which provides the required knowledge and abilities, is acceptable.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE: - Completion of the City of La Mirada Aquatics Certification Schools as assigned upon hire.
- A Food Handler's Certification may be required. Certification will be provided by the City.
Supplemental Information Positions require availability to work varying shifts on days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Candidates with open availability will be given preference when hiring.
IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER: - Mandatory staff training is scheduled for Saturday, May 10, 2025.
- Buccaneer Bay water park at Splash! Aquatics Center is open from May 17 to September 27, 2025. Base your availability to work during this period.

Applicants may be considered for a position other than the position applied for, contingent to the swim test and certification school results. Swim tests are scheduled on the following dates:
SWIM TEST (must pass one): * Saturday, February 8, 2025 * Sunday, March 2, 2025
* Friday, March 21, 2025 * Saturday, April 12, 2025 (Tentative date)
Applicants who successfully pass the swim test may be invited to attend the required Aquatics Certification Schools. Completion of the Aquatics Certification School is required for hiring consideration.
Attendance is mandatory. LIFEGUARD SCHOOL DATES (must attend one certification school): - School A includes all following dates and times: Saturday, March 23, 2025, Saturday, March 29, 2025, and Sunday March 30, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
- School B includes all following dates and times: Saturday, April 19, 2025, Saturday, April 26, 2025, and Sunday April 27, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
- School C includes all following dates and times: Monday April 21, 2025, through Friday April 25, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. (Tentative date and time).
Candidates will be required to pass a City administered pre-employment requirements which include live scan fingerprinting and a medical examination as part of the Selection Process. Candidates who do not pass any portion of the above processes will be disqualified and removed from proceeding in the selection process.

The City of La Mirada offers a competitive compensation and benefits package based on the adopted Appointments are normally made at the first step of a five step salary range. One year of City service is required to advance to the next pay step in the salary range.
